The Red and White Dragons
Two dragons sleeping beneath Dinas Emrys, whose fight foretold the struggle for Britain.
Beneath the hill of Dinas Emrys in the mountains of Wales lies a pool, and in the pool two dragons slept inside a buried chest: one red, one white.
When King Vortigern tried to build a tower on the hill, its walls fell every night. His wise men told him to sprinkle the foundations with the blood of a boy who had no father. The boy they found was the young Merlin, who told the king the true cause: the sleeping dragons beneath the stones.
The pool was drained and the dragons woke and fought. The white dragon drove the red to the edge of the pool three times, and three times the red dragon rallied and drove the white back. Merlin explained that the red dragon was the people of Britain and the white dragon the invading Saxons, and that their struggle would go on for generations.
The dragons are not known to have died. The canon does not say where they went.
