The vessel of the Last Supper, whose quest scatters the Round Table and which only the purest knight may achieve.
The Grail is the vessel used at the Last Supper, brought to Britain by Joseph of Arimathea and kept for centuries in a hidden castle by a line of wounded kings.
One Pentecost it appeared in the hall at Camelot, veiled in white samite, filling the hall with light and feeding every knight with the food he most desired. Then it vanished, and the knights swore to seek it for a year and a day.
The quest is less a journey than a judgment. Most knights fail because of their pride, their violence, or their divided loyalties. Lancelot comes close and is turned back by his love for the queen. Only Galahad, with Percival and Bors as his companions, achieves it.
Arthur mourns the quest even as it begins, knowing that many of his knights will never come home.
