Cthulhu
A vast being from the stars who lies dead but dreaming in the sunken city of R'lyeh.
Cthulhu is one of the Great Old Ones, a being that came down from the stars in the remote past, long before humans existed. Its shape, glimpsed in carvings and in nightmares, combines something like an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, with a pulpy tentacled head, a scaly body, and narrow wings.
It lies in its house at R'lyeh, a city now sunk beneath the Pacific. It is not dead in the way we understand death. It dreams, and its dreams leak into the minds of sensitive people across the world: artists, poets, and the mentally fragile, who wake with images and words they cannot explain.
Its cult is scattered and ancient, with followers in remote swamps, islands, and cities. Their chant is Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn: "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."
When the stars are right, the cult believes, R'lyeh will rise and Cthulhu will wake.
